NETFLIX SENSATION: ‘The Wonderfools’ Clinches #1 Spot Globally Just Days Post-Release, Defying Lead Actor Controversy
SEOUL — Netflix has struck gold once again with its latest Korean original series, The Wonderfools, which has officially secured the number one spot on the streaming platform just three days after its highly anticipated global premiere. The supernatural comedy-adventure is defying pre-release skepticism, proving that a masterclass in storytelling and powerhouse acting can overcome even the heaviest off-screen drama.
Set against the nostalgic, turn-of-the-century backdrop of 1999, The Wonderfools follows a mismatched group of neighborhood outcasts who unexpectedly inherit superpowers. Forced together by fate, they must unite to defend their town from an onslaught of dangerous villains.
Overcoming Pre-Release Risk
The series faced massive expectations long before its May 15 debut, largely due to the pedigree of hitmaker director Yoo In-sik—the creative visionary behind Extraordinary Attorney Woo and the Dr. Romantic franchise. The drama also excited fans by staging a mini-reunion of Extraordinary Attorney Woo alumni, including Park Eun-bin, Choi Dae-hoon, and Im Seong-jae.
However, the production was thrown into a tailspin just weeks before launch when lead actor Cha Eun-woo—who is currently serving out his mandatory military service in the military band—became embroiled in a massive multi-billion won tax reassessment controversy. Online forums were quickly flooded with concerns that the scandal would derail the show's reception.
Addressing the elephant in the room at the drama’s production press conference, director Yoo In-sik firmly stood by the project. Emphasizing that the production team prioritized the tireless work of the entire cast and crew, Yoo confirmed that Cha Eun-woo’s scenes would remain fully intact without any post-production edits.
A Global Box Office Triumph
That gamble has paid off spectacularly. Data from global OTT tracking platform FlixPatrol reveals that The Wonderfools instantly pierced the Top 10 charts in 28 countries and territories, dominating regions like South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Brazil.
Domestically, the series kicked off its run at No. 3, climbed to No. 2 by day two, and officially captured the crowning No. 1 spot on Netflix Korea by its third day. Viewers have been captivated by the electrifying onscreen chemistry between Park Eun-bin, whose nuanced emotional performance is receiving rave reviews, and Cha Eun-woo, who delivers a dramatic, career-pivoting transformation.
Villainous Breakout Performances Steal the Show
Beyond the star-studded leads, critics are pointing to the series’ compelling, layered antagonists as the secret weapon behind its addictive immersion.
Actress Jung Yi-seo is earning widespread acclaim for her chilling portrayal of Seok Ju-ran, one of three "Wunderkind" test subjects experimented on by a mysterious project leader. Left deaf by childhood trauma in a welfare facility, Ju-ran wields the terrifying superpower to strip others of their hearing and manipulate them like puppets. Jung delivers an eerie, restrained performance—relying on cold, piercing glares and subtle breathing rather than explosive theatrics. Audiences are already calling it her "career-defining role" as she expertly navigates the tragic psychology of a woman willing to become a monster to protect her younger sibling.
Equally menacing is actor Bae Na-ra, who brings intense, theatrical energy to the role of the charismatic villain Kim Pal-ho. Leveraging his robust background in musical theater, Bae commands the screen with a threatening aura and sharp, calculated movements. His high-stakes supernatural showdowns with Cha Eun-woo’s character, Lee Un-jeong, have provided the show's most suspenseful, heart-pounding action sequences. Bae is being highly praised for adding emotional depth to the villain, capturing a painful, complicated relationship with his father that builds on his previous acclaimed work in D.P. Season 2 and Weak Hero Class 2.
The Verdict
By pivoting a major pre-release crisis into an undeniable triumph, The Wonderfools has solidified itself as Netflix's newest flagship hit. Anchored by an airtight script, Yoo In-sik’s polished direction, and a stellar ensemble cast, word-of-mouth buzz is spreading exponentially across global online communities. For Netflix's latest superpower epic, the global phenomenon is only just beginning.

BLACKPINK’s Jisoo Distances Herself from Family Controversy as Sister Kim Ji-yoon Joins New tvN Show
The spotlight on BLACKPINK member Jisoo’s family has taken a complicated turn this week. While the idol’s older sister, Kim Ji-yoon, is gearing up for a high-profile television appearance, Jisoo’s legal team has been forced to address serious allegations involving their older brother.
Kim Ji-yoon Joins "Kill It: The Style Creator War"
On April 22, tvN released a teaser for its upcoming variety program, Kill It: The Style Creator War (hereafter referred to as Kill It). Premiering on May 12, the show is a fashion-focused survival competition—the first of its kind from CJ ENM in a decade—aimed at finding the next major "style icon" in K-fashion.
Among the 100 contestants and seven label leaders, Kim Ji-yoon immediately grabbed the public’s attention. Known as "Gunpo’s Han Hyo-joo" for her striking visuals, Ji-yoon is already an established influencer and previously appeared on ENA’s Super Seller. However, her participation in Kill It has met with a mixed reception due to the timing of recent family scandals.
Serious Allegations Against Jisoo’s Brother
The controversy centers on Jisoo’s older brother, identified in reports as "Mr. A." On April 13, he was reportedly arrested on charges related to an incident involving a female streamer (BJ). Allegations include attempting non-consensual physical contact and subsequent blackmail.
The situation intensified when a woman claiming to be Mr. A’s wife posted online, alleging a history of domestic abuse and controlling behavior. While the prosecution recently rejected a request for a detention warrant due to a lack of evidence at this stage, the public outcry has remained intense, largely because of the brother's proximity to a global superstar.
BLISSOO Releases Official Statement
In response to the growing scrutiny, Jisoo’s independent agency, BLISSOO, issued a firm statement through legal representatives on April 20. The agency clarified that Jisoo has "no connection" to her brother’s private life or the current legal dispute.
The statement emphasized several key points:
Independence: Jisoo has lived independently from her family since her trainee days and was unaware of the details regarding her brother's personal conduct.
Agency Management: BLISSOO denied rumors that Mr. A is involved in managing the agency. While he reportedly offered "limited advice" during its initial setup, he has no decision-making power and receives no compensation.
Legal Action: The agency warned that they will pursue strict civil and criminal action against those spreading false information or malicious rumors linking Jisoo to the scandal.
A Divided Public Response
The contrast between Kim Ji-yoon’s career advancement and the allegations against their brother has left fans and netizens divided. While many support the sisters' right to pursue their careers independently of their brother's actions, others have expressed discomfort with the timing of Ji-yoon’s TV promotion.
As Kill It prepares for its May premiere, all eyes remain on how the family will navigate this turbulent period and whether the legal proceedings regarding "Mr. A" will cast a further shadow over the siblings' public activities.

“Yumi’s Cells Season 3” Hits No. 1 as Ratings Rise and Romance Heats Up
Yumi’s Cells Season 3 is quickly proving it’s not just a comeback—it’s a full-on success story.
The drama has climbed to the top spot in its time slot, pulling in around 2.3% in nationwide ratings, a noticeable jump from its earlier numbers. That might not sound massive at first glance, but for a cable drama, it’s a strong showing, and a clear sign that viewers are locking in.
What’s driving the surge?
It all comes down to the story.
This season follows Yumi, now a successful romance novelist, who seems to have everything, except emotional fulfillment. But things start to shift when a new character enters her life, sparking fresh tension and, of course, a new wave of romance.
And fans are eating it up.
The chemistry between the leads, especially the evolving relationship between Kim Go-eun’s Yumi and Kim Jae-won’s character, is generating buzz online. That emotional push-pull—something the series has always done well, is clearly hitting again.
Beyond TV ratings, the drama is also dominating digitally. It ranked No. 1 in paid subscriber contribution on TVING, proving its popularity goes beyond traditional viewership.
After a four-year break, Yumi’s Cells didn’t just return, it came back stronger, capturing both longtime fans and new viewers.
With rising ratings, growing buzz, and a storyline that keeps evolving, Season 3 is shaping up to be one of the standout K-dramas of 2026.

A Villain in the 21st Century: Lim Ji-yeon’s Wild New Role Revealed
The upcoming SBS series “My Royal Nemesis” is generating significant buzz ahead of its scheduled debut on May 8. The drama has captured the interest of K-drama fans with its high-concept premise, blending historical intrigue with a modern-day romantic clash.
A Fusion of Eras and Personalities
Directed by Han Tae Seop (Hot Stove League) and penned by rising writer Kang Hyun Joo, the series centers on an unusual supernatural occurrence. Lim Ji-yeon stars as Shin Seo-ri, a struggling actress whose life takes a sharp turn when she becomes possessed by the soul of Kang Dan-sim—a legendary and ruthless villainess from the Joseon era who fought her way to becoming a royal consort.
The story follows the "possessed" Seo-ri as she crosses paths with Cha Se-gye (Heo Nam-jun), a cold-hearted chaebol heir known as a "monster of capitalism." Their meeting sparks a volatile, war-like romance as two formidable personalities from different centuries collide.
First Look: A Villain Out of Time
New stills released on April 15 highlight the comedic and dramatic fish-out-of-water elements of the show. In the images, Lim Ji-yeon perfectly portrays the bewilderment of a Joseon woman navigating the 21st century. Her wide-eyed confusion provides a stark contrast to her character's reputation as a calculating villain, leaving viewers curious about how a historical powerhouse will adapt to modern society.
Promotional posters further emphasize the dual-timeline theme, showing the leads facing off across 18th-century Joseon and contemporary Korea. The tagline, "A villain meets a new world," suggests a plot that explores more than just romance, hinting at a transformative journey for both characters.
Lim Ji-yeon’s Latest Transformation
Following her iconic performance as the antagonist Park Yeon-jin in The Glory, Lim Ji-yeon continues to solidify her reputation as a versatile actress. In My Royal Nemesis, she is expected to showcase a broad emotional range, balancing the intensity of a historical villain with the vulnerability of a modern woman struggling to regain control of her life.
Joining her is Heo Nam-jun, who has been steadily rising through roles in Sweet Home and Your Honor. His portrayal of the cynical, efficiency-driven Cha Se-gye is expected to provide the perfect foil for Lim’s chaotic energy.
“My Royal Nemesis” is set to take over the Friday-Saturday slot on SBS, airing its first episode on May 8 at 9:50 PM KST.

Sulli’s Brother Drops a Cryptic Warning—Who Is He Targeting?
Sulli's older brother has stirred controversy with a cryptic Instagram post, which many believe is aimed at actor Kim Soo-hyun. His message, posted on March 21, reads:
"Kim-ssi, I have a lot to say, but I can't. You're going to fall from your high position, so you better hold on tight."
Although he did not explicitly name Kim Soo-hyun, the use of “Kim-ssi” (a common way to refer to someone with the surname Kim in Korean) has led to speculation. Given the ongoing controversies surrounding Kim Soo-hyun, netizens suspect that Sulli’s brother might be calling him out.
Possible Connection to Kim Soo-hyun
Kim Soo-hyun and Sulli previously worked together in the 2017 movie Real, a film that was widely criticized for its confusing plot and excessive adult themes. Despite high expectations due to its star-studded cast and production value, Real became a box office failure, and much of the negative attention was directed at Sulli, who played a daring role in the film.
At the time, Sulli faced intense public scrutiny, with many criticizing her performance and branding her as “reckless” due to the film’s controversial scenes. Some believe that Kim Soo-hyun and others involved in the project did not publicly support Sulli during the backlash. This lack of support may have deepened the struggles she was already facing with public perception and online hate.
Why Now?
The resurfacing of this issue comes amid Kim Soo-hyun’s ongoing scandals. The actor is currently under fire due to allegations regarding his past relationship with the late actress Kim Sae-ron. Some speculate that Sulli’s brother might be hinting at additional undisclosed information about Kim Soo-hyun, suggesting that he will soon face consequences for his actions.
Public Reaction
The cryptic nature of Sulli’s brother’s post has led to divided opinions online. Some netizens believe he is finally speaking up about something that has been hidden for years, while others argue that without clear details, it’s unfair to assume his words are directed at Kim Soo-hyun.
As discussions continue, many are now revisiting the events surrounding Real and questioning whether Sulli was unfairly left to face backlash alone. Whether Sulli’s brother will clarify his statement remains to be seen, but his post has undeniably added more fuel to the controversies surrounding Kim Soo-hyun.
